Live together and live longer.
Loneliness can have the same effect as smoking in determining one's length of life.
In a recent study it seems that the majority of over-75's said they felt lonely 'most or all of the time'.10 Downing Street has a team, headed by David Halpern, which attempts to 'nudge' people into changing behaviour rather than confronting them with the need to change. It is known as the Behavioural Insight Team. They found that having someone with whom to share problems and worries seems to affect mortality more than anything else.
The team is encouraging citizens to delay their retirement and remain in the social environment of employment as long as possible.
The study also showed that most older people live alone, sometimes in big houses, which impacts on the housing shortage.
